Landscape Architecture

Battle McCarthy's approach includes the following landscape services:

  • Landscape and ecological design
  • Sustainable masterplanning
  • Structural detailing (hard landscape works)
  • Hydrology and Sustainable Urban Drainage Systems (SUDS)

Projects range in size from traditional landscape design for single buildings to integrated landscape masterplans for large-scale mixed-use developments combining public & private realm, and completely new urban settlements on regenerated brownfield land.

The practice has completed a number of landscape design commissions ranging from large mixed-use urban regeneration projects to small-scale redevelopment of ecologically sensitive green field sites.

Landscape & Ecology

  • Establish ecologically robust and multi-functional landscapes
  • Explore visual, social & ecological links beyond the site
  • Create a landscape that extends into and onto buildings
  • Integrate landscape & water management practices to promote amenity and biodiversity
  • Environmental landscape Systems including Sustainable Urban Drainage (SUDS), xerophytic landscapes and educational landscapes

Site Layout & Planning

  • Optimising massing & orientation to maximise opportunities for passive heating, cooling & ventilation
  • Create a range of micro-climates suited to different internal and external uses
  • Closer relationship between buildings & landscape
  • Improved public realm and integration of movement corridors

Water Management

  • Establish an integrated water management strategy
  • Design surface water disposal systems as part of the landscape scheme offering opportunity for habitat creation
  • Minimise demands on off-site infrastructure by promoting strategies that control the quantity & quality of run-off leaving the development
