CLIMATE CHANGE
Anthropogenic activities over the last century have been compellingly linked to the rising trend in concentration of atmospheric CO2 and global air temperatures. The potentially catastrophic effects of these changes on our global ecosystem are increasingly recognised, including rising sea levels and flooding contrasted with water scarcity and sanitation problems, species displacement and habitat loss, the spread north and south of tropical disease and impact on agricultural productivity.

The Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change published a report in 1990 demonstrating the rise in concentration of green house gas (GHG) emissions. Since then it has been proposed that in order to moderate the predicted temperature increase to a rate that would not threaten the global environment a global reduction of 60 per cent by 2050 would be required. With the built environment accounting for 50 per cent of emissions in the UK, a clear responsibility lies with the sector to reduce CO2 emissions.
