DestiNY USA is a multi billion-dollar
project in Syracuse at the northern end of New York
State. The project consists of the largest retail mall
in the world with 44 million visitors expected per year
and is situated below a 100 acre covered eco roof park,
incorporating an aqua park and various leisure facilities
including a ‘hill town’ and multiplex cinemas.
The development includes sustainable hotels providing
up to 25,000 keys of hotel accommodation. There is a
vast convention center at the northern end of the site
and a sports stadium. It also has a fully integrated
innovative transportation system, which will be the
first of its kind in the world.
Battle McCarthy and Foster & Partners,
have developed an ultra low fossil fuel dependent solution
for the masterplan scheme as a whole. This has required
careful studies of all the various components of the
development to devise passive and natural means of dealing
with thermal loads, providing light, fresh air, ventilation
and using sustainable materials throughout. Central
to the scheme is a site wide biomass energy center.
This makes use of natural NY state crop wastage amongst
other fuel supplies and supplies all the power and heat
to the development.
Areas of particular interest are the
eco hotels, one of which will be the first building
integrated wind turbine installation of its kind and
magnitude in the world. Other hotels incorporate the
very latest in sustainable technologies.
