Battle McCarthy has proposed an integrated
design strategy for this large retail development in
Kent.
The aim was to create a street, which
is naturally ventilated yet moderates the extremes of
the external climate.
Traditionally, the shopping mall has
been an artificially lit, air-conditioned space. Rather
than creating a protected environment, the 'internal'
street has induced feelings of enclosure, lethargy and
even Sick Building Syndrome. Eric Kuhne Associates with
Battle McCarthy Consultant Engineers, set about designing
a 'shopping avenue' that possesses all the benefits
of an outdoor street, such as sunshine and a fresh breeze,
but filters out the unpleasant aspects such as noise
and pollution.
